Metabolism feature in Empire of Sports

“The metabolism engine is a simulation of what happens in the human body when it’s engaged in physical effort. These sensations, these chemical reactions are modelled so that the avatar experiences realistic fatigue and its body responds appropriately.

In classical RPG terms, the metabolism is comparable to basic resources such as life or mana. It implies the same kind of resource management for the player, but it’s much less abstract than the life points system commonly seen in games. Everyone has played sports, everyone knows what it’s like to get tired and slow down, so it’s much more intuitive.

But unlike real life, fatigue won’t stop the avatars from performing whatever actions they choose. They simply won’t be as strong, as quick or as precise. Players will have to strategically plan their efforts throughout entire matches to ensure peak performance when they need it. In-game professional athletes will have to take extra care with this; opponents at the upper levels will gladly let the competition exhaust themselves early so that they can dominate the majority of the game.

Over time the metabolism parameters will evolve further: cardiac strength, recovery abilities, etc. will all adjust in response to the avatars’ physical attributes, skills, specific sport techniques and even his or her play style.”
